About Pumpkin Tea

Pumpkin Spice Latte is a drink made with popular pumpkin spices commonly used for making delicious seasonal pies. The original Pumpkin Pie Spice Latte is made with coffee, instead of tea. Tea, however, is a wonderful option that can add subtle notes to Pumpkin Latte, reduce caffeine content and offer sustained energy. And that’s how the Pumpkin Tea was born. Pumpkin tea is usually made with black tea, but herbal teas can be used too. The most commonly used black teas are either strong and malty types or spiced blends for chai lattes. For a caffeine-free evening Pumpkin Pie Spice Tea, the best herbal choice is rooibos tea. Rooibos is naturally sweet, warming and rich in antioxidants. It will add much more color to your drink, making it intensely orange, as a real pumpkin drink should be.

Where to buy pumpkin tea?

Today, pumpkin tea is available in many styles – from premade tea lattes in coffee shops, to delicious pre-made blends for making regular hot tea. If you want to make your own latte rather than just a simple hot drink, simply brew the pumpkin spice tea blend in 50-100 ml of water and top up with hot frothed milk. What is Pumpkin Spice?

Pumpkin spice is a mix of spices used in American cuisine for making pumpkin pies. It’s available under the name pumpkin pie spice too. The usual ingredients are cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and ginger. Spices are usually powdered, because their initial use was for cooking, rather than making drinks. However, you can use a blend of whole spices, preferably crushed using mortar and pestle. Crushing fresh spices will give a more intense flavor.

Is pumpkin spice actually made of pumpkin?

If you never had a chance to try it, don’t let the name fool you. This mix does not contain any pumpkins. Therefore, to satisfy the autumn pumpkin cravings, you will need to add a pumpkin note too. However, the Pumpkin Spice Latte usually does contain pumpkin puree.

Pumpkin Pie Spice Alternatives

If you don’t want to use pre-made pumpkin spice blend, or it’s not available where you live, you can easily make your own. Pumpkin spice is a mix of ground cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and ginger, and it’s very easy to make it from a scratch. Use a teaspoon of ground ginger, a teaspoon ground nutmeg, 2/3 teaspoon of ground cloves and 4 - 4 ½ teaspoons of ground cinnamon. Substitute one teaspoon of cinnamon with one teaspoon of allspice. Mix them well and place them in an airtight container for future use.

Pumpkin Spice Chai Tea Recipe

For a simple and easy Pumpkin Spice tea, you will need black tea, preferably chai, and a milk of your choice. With a pre-made Chai blends bursting with chai spices you can add an extra dose of warmth and coziness to your cup. We recommend using almond or creamier cashew milk. For a caffeine-free version of the simple pumpkin spice, chai tea latte opt for rooibos chai tea as a base.

  • 1 cup of almond milk
  • 1 rounded teaspoon of Simple Chai
  • ½ teaspoon of Pumpkin pie spice
  • 1–2 teaspoons of pumpkin syrup (depending on desired sweetness)

How to make pumpkin chai tea?

  1. Add milk to a saucepan and place over low to medium fire.
  2. Add one rounded teaspoon of Simple Chai tea and half a teaspoon of Pumpkin Pie Spice.
  3. Simmer for around 10 minutes.
  4. Strain and use an electric frother to make foam.
  5. Pour 1-2 teaspoons of pumpkin syrup into a mug, then add tea.
Extra tip: Replace Simple Chai tea with Pumpkin Spice Black tea or Pumpkin Spice Herbal tea for a caffeine free fall drink.

Does pumpkin chai tea have caffeine?

Pumpkin chai tea is made with black tea. All black teas contain caffeine. If you want a caffeine free drink, replace the black with herbal tea. A great substitute for Simple Chai black tea in this recipe is Herbal Chai.

Homemade Pumpkin Spice Tea Recipe

For a thicker, more flavorful Pumpkin Spice Tea, try using pumpkin puree. You can make your own puree or buy the pre-made ones from the store. For the all-natural drink, we recommend doing everything from scratch. With fresh pumpkins being widely available throughout fall, use the opportunity to remove all unnecessary additives from your diet. The best choice for a pumpkin puree? Sweet butternut pumpkin or sugar pumpkin with enough natural sugar and intense flavor and color to make you drink look and taste delicious.

Homemade Pumpkin Spice Tea ingredients

  • 1 small pumpkin (sweet butternut pumpkin or sugar pumpkin) for 2 tablespoons of pumpkin puree
  • 1 cup of whole milk
  • ½ teaspoon of Pumpkin pie spice
  • 1 spoon of honey or maple syrup
  • A drop of vanilla extract
  • 1 rounded teaspoon of Simple Chai
  • 50 ml of boiling water
  • 100 ml of double cream

Directions

  1. To make a pumpkin puree, wash the pumpkin, then cut it into half, peel and cut into small cubes.
  2. Boil in water for 20-30 minutes until it’s soft.
  3. Mash the pumpkin into a puree.
  4. Bring water to a boil and steep the tea leaves for 10 minutes.
  5. Add 2 spoons of pumpkin puree and pumpkin pie spice into a saucepan and cook while stirring for about 2-3 minutes.
  6. Add whole milk, honey or sugar, and vanilla extract and cook over the low-medium fire for about 10 minutes.
  7. Whole milk will give the creamiest drink.
  8. For a dairy-free alternative we recommend using creamy cashew milk.
  9. Pour into a mug.
  10. Pour the double cream into a bowl and use an electric whisk to make whipped cream.
  11. Top up your Real Pumpkin Spice tea with whipped cream.
  12. Drink while deliciously warm.
Extra tip: If you want to cheat and make the whole process of making a pumpkin spice chai latte easier, simmer the tea leaves in milk over low-medium fire for about ten minutes, then add all ingredients to a blender and blend. You will get a frothy drink in no time.

Coconut Pumpkin Spice Latte

Coconut Pumpkin latte recipe is perfect for anyone who doesn’t want to give up coconut once the summer is over but wants to enjoy true spiced pumpkin flavors at the same time. To spice things up, even more, add a tiny bit of turmeric powder to the mix or use a pre-made Coconut Spice tea blend for the most intense coconut pumpkin tea latte in the world.

Coconut Pumpkin Spice Latte ingredients

  • 1 cup of coconut milk
  • 1 teaspoon of brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon of pumpkin pie spice
  • 1 teaspoon of loose-leaf black tea
  • 2 tablespoons of pumpkin puree
  • 100 ml of coconut whipping cream
  • ½ teaspoon of shredded coconut
  • 50 ml of hot water

Directions

  1. Bring water to a boil and steep the tea leaves for 10 minutes.
  2. In a saucepan, mix pumpkin puree and pumpkin pie spice and cook while stirring for about 3 minutes.
  3. Add coconut milk and brown sugar and simmer with stirring for around 10-15 minutes until all ingredients are dissolved.
  4. Strain the tea and add to a saucepan.
  5. Use a frother to make froth.
  6. Next, use a separate bowl to make whipped coconut cream.
  7. Pour the latte into a mug, top up with whipped cream and sprinkle shredded coconut on top.
Extra tip: Use cotton tea bags for loose leaf tea to make cooking and straining easier. Simply fill the tea bag with leaves and tighten the strings before adding to saucepan.
