Pears may not be as popular in tea blends as other fruits, but that doesn’t make them any less delicious. Try these three recipes to get a whole new perspective on this very common, but amazing fruit.

What is pear tea?

Pear tea is an infusion of pears in water. Although pure pear tea is quite uncommon, pears are not completely unusual in tea blends. Because of their delicate flavor, they are mostly blended with green or white teas. However, it’s this same delicate flavor that makes them so refreshing. Non-obtrusive, usually delicately sweet, with just a tiny bit of acidity.

Sometimes, pear juice is used in homemade recipes instead of the real fruit. If you are able to buy ripe, juicy flavorful fruits, choose them instead, and save pear juice for flavoring pure teas when you want to sweeten pure tea with something more flavorful than sugar or honey.

Pear Tea Recipes

Spiced Pear Tea

Pears and spices go exceptionally well together. You can experiment with ratios and choose your own favorite ingredients and try replacing star anise with cloves or ginger. While many pear tea recipes will include pear juice rather than real pears, if you really want to get the most pear flavor out of pears, always choose perfectly ripped fruits. Next, allow them to simmer in boiling water for 15-30 minutes, even longer if you have time.

Ingredients:

  • 2 ripe pears
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 2-3 star anise
  • 3 cups of water
  • 1 spoon of honey (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Wash, peel, de-seed and dice pears.
  2. Add diced pear together with water and spices into a small saucepan.
  3. Bring it to a boil over high heat.
  4. Reduce the heat and simmer for 15-30 minutes.
  5. Remove from the heat and strain.
  6. Add honey, stir and serve.

Pear Mint Green Tea

Naturally refreshing pears blend very well with mint and green tea. With a less minty flavor, spearmint is a better choice when making tea with fresh ingredients. The best green teas for making homemade recipes are teas with stronger and bolder flavor such as Gunpowder, Young Hyson or Guranse Green tea.

Ingredients

  • 1 ripe pear
  • 1-2 refresh spearmint springs
  • 2 teaspoons of green tea
  • 2-3 cups of water
  • 1 spoon of honey (optional)

Instructions

  1. Wash, peel, de-seed and dice the pear.
  2. Add diced pear together with water into a small saucepan.
  3. Ring it to a boil over high heat.
  4. Reduce the heat and simmer for 20 minutes.
  5. Remove from the heat and set aside to cool for a few minutes.
  6. Add tea leaves and spearmint.
  7. Steep for 5 minutes.
  8. Strain the tea into cups.
  9. Add honey, stir and serve.

If you prefer iced teas over hot drinks, you will love this tea chilled in summer. Let it cool down, then serve over ice.

Pear White Tea

If you want a super simple and easy cup of tea, cold brewing is the answer. White peony is great for cold brewing, and it will release just the right amount of flavor to match the delicacy of green pears. Choose extra ripe organic pears.

Ingredients:

  • 3 extra ripe pears
  • 2-3 spoons of Pai Mu Tan tea
  • 1-5 liter of water

Instructions:

  1. Wash, peel, de-seed and dice pears.
  2. Add pears and white tea leaves into a large pitcher.
  3. Add lukewarm or cold water.
  4. Cover the pitcher and place in in the fridge for 8-12 hours.
  5. Drink within 24 hours.

The longer you let your tea steep, the stronger the flavor you get. Never cold-brew for more than 24 hours. Even the most delicate teas could become bitter and change flavor when over-steeped. Best without sweetener.
